Lynching of Bob Hudson
October 9, 1893
Weakley County, TN
Newspaper article depicting the lynching of Bob Hudson and beating of this wife.
Weakley County, on the western northern edge of Tennessee, is the homeland of the Chickasaw Nation, who stewarded and cared for the land for 1000s of years until 1818, when they are forced to cede their lands to the U.S. government.
Seventy-five years later, in 1893, a Black woman named Mrs. Hudson, who lives outside Dresden, the Weakley county seat, wins an assault and battery case against a white man, who is arrested and fined. Area white folks are offended.
Ten masked white men show up at the Hudson home on October 9, drag Mrs. Hudson to the street and whip her mercilessly. Mr. Hudson runs to defend her, and the mob shoots him dead.
He's one of at least eight documented lynching victims in Weakley County between 1869 and 1915.
