Days Of Rage

October 8, 1969
Chicago, IL

Protesters, including members of Students for a Democratic Society, demonstrate through downtown Chicago on October 11, 1969, during the trial of the Chicago Seven.

Three days of mob actions get under way this evening in 1969 in Chicago, led by the Weathermen, self-described revolutionaries with the goal of overthrowing the U.S. government.

Two days earlier, some Weathermen blew up a memorial to the policemen killed in the 1886 Haymarket affair. Now, 200 to 350 demonstrators gather at the site, listen to speeches and march towards the Gold Coast neighborhood, smashing car and shop windows as they go. They come up against 2000 policemen armed with clubs, tear gas, and revolvers. Six protesters are shot and many more injured.

Weathermen march for two days. On October 11, 300 protestors attack windows downtown. Police arrest more than half.

The Weathermen will commit more violence over the coming year, but never succeed in overthrowing the government.
