Orthodox Jewish Protest (Borough Park)
October 7, 2020
Brooklyn, NY
Orthodox Jewish gathered in Borough Park, Brooklyn to protest planned lockdowns of their neighborhoods amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
This week in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, in the middle of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, the governor of New York orders nine neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens to return to lockdown because of local spikes in COVID-19 cases. Hundreds of schools and businesses close after being partially open for a couple weeks, and places of worship are limited to ten attendees at a time.
On this night, hundreds of Jewish protestors take to the streets — many not wearing masks. After midnight, a crowd builds a bonfire near Borough Park to burn COVID masks. They chant, "Jewish lives matter" and "Donald Trump."
A Hasidic journalist is chased down and beaten by a mob, incited by the protest organizer who accuses him of informing on his own neighbors. The two publicly reconcile weeks later.
