Occupy Oakland Protest on November 2, 2011
On October 10, 2011, a thousand people gather in a park in Oakland, California, and set up a camp with a kitchen, library and children's village, to draw attention to U.S. wealth and social inequality. Celebrities and politicians voice support and hundreds of activists converge on the site daily, while city government struggles to manage safety concerns and police response.
Police and occupiers antagonize each other for weeks. Police in riot gear use tear gas, beanbag bullets and flash-bang grenades, trying to control the crowd, at one point fracturing the skull of an Iraq War veteran. Demonstrators throw trash, firecrackers and even paint at police.
On November 2, tens of thousands march on the Port of Oakland and temporarily shut it down.
The police raid and clear the camp on November 14.
