On this day in 1971, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on the Rio Grande — in the Tiwa homeland — police arrest several young Chicano men for drinking beer in Roosevelt Park. A crowd gathers. A frisbee hits a squad car and police react with night sticks and blackjacks. Rocks and bottles fill the air. A group of Black Berets — a Chicano organization modeled on the Black Panthers — tries to clear people from the park, but police fire shotguns into the crowd. Chaos erupts. The National Guard is deployed but violence lasts well into the night. The next day at the park, state officials promise an investigation into police brutality. Mobs gather throughout the city, smashing windows, looting, overturning cars and setting fires. Dozens are injured but nobody dies and the riots end after three days.
