The 1990 NBA Finals between the Detroit Pistons and the Portland Trail Blazers

On this night in 1990, the Detroit Pistons defeat the Portland Trail Blazers in the final game of the 1990 NBA Basketball Finals — their second consecutive championship win. The game is played in Portland, but by the time it ends — at 11:30 pm Detroit time — people are taking to the streets in Detroit and nearby suburbs, lighting firecrackers, firing guns and blaring car horns. Celebrations get out of control. Windows are smashed, businesses vandalized and looted, and a lot of bullets are fired. When early morning arrives, the unrest has settled, 141 people have been arrested, over 100 people are hospitalized and eight people are dead. The Pistons will not win another Championship until 2004.
