Unrest broke out in over 150 cities during the "Long Hot Summer of 1967," a response to the police brutality, poverty, and racial inequality suffered in Black communities nationwide. This day is the first of three days of riots in Cincinnati in 1967. People have gathered to protest the arrest of a Black man on charges of trespassing and blocking traffic while picketing the conviction of his cousin, the accused Cincinnati Strangler. The protest quickly unravels as some people start smashing windows, looting businesses, starting fires, and demolishing cars. Mobs grow and spread to other neighborhoods. 900 Ohio National Guardsmen enter the city, armed with machine guns, and ordered to shoot-to-kill. When the violence quells, one person is dead, dozens injured, and over 400 arrested.
