Occupy Wall Street Movement

Occupy Wall Street protesters marching down Broadway toward Lower Manhattan, New York.
15 years ago today, 1000 demonstrators convene on Zuccotti Park in the Wall Street area of NYC, and organize a protest camp to draw attention to the gap between the super-rich “one percent” and the rest of America. Flags, chants and social media posts declare, “We are the 99%!” Over weeks, the movement raises money, builds a robust support network, and develops a “human microphone” public address system.
On October 1, NYPD arrests 700 protestors on the Brooklyn Bridge.
On October 10, the Mayor welcomes the protestors to stay in Zuccotti Park indefinitely. Two days later, the park’s owners ask the NYPD to clear the occupiers so the park can be cleaned. Activists clean the park themselves.
On November 15, after 59 days, the Mayor cites public health and calls on police to clear the park.
