On October 14, 1979, between 75,000 and 125,000 gay men, lesbians, bisexual people, and straight allies march on Washington D.C., demanding civil rights, a ban on discrimination based on sexual orientation, a repeal of all anti-lesbian and gay laws, and an end to the discrimination, oppression, and harassment of homosexuals.

The demonstration includes well-known speakers and is covered by the national press.

Over 500 participants reach out to every member of Congress expressing support for gay rights legislation. They meet with at least 50 senators and more than 150 representatives.

The next D.C. march for gay rights will take place in 1987 (see October 11).
