On this day, 158 years ago, in the rolling hills of southwest Tennessee, in land long occupied by Chickasaw people, in the town of Pulaski, birthplace of the original Ku Klux Klan two years prior, an armed mob of 18 (unmasked) white men attack a grocery store owned by John Carter, a Black freedman. Eight people are hiding in the store after the white owner of another grocery store had shot a Black man for threatening his (Black) mistress. Many shots are fired until the town constable brokers a truce. But the white men open fire again when the group tries to leave the store, killing at least two Black people and wounding most of the rest. Over the year that follows, members of the KKK will murder thousands of Americans — mostly Black — with impunity.
