On this day in 2021, a mob of 2000–2500 supporters of President Donald Trump — many armed — storm the Capitol Building of the U.S. government.

Inspired by a speech given by Trump on the National Mall earlier in the day, in which he refused to concede his loss in the election — insisting it was “rigged” and “stolen” and that his supporters will need to “fight like hell” to save democracy — the mob seeks to overturn the election by halting the transition of power to President-elect Joseph Biden.

The U.S. Congress is forced to evacuate mid-proceedings. The mob smashes through windows and doors, and occupies and vandalizes the building for several hours. One protester is killed and one police officer dies of a stroke after being assaulted. Over 170 police officers are injured in the attack, and four die by suicide in the months following. The mob is not successful in overturning the election results.

Trump will be re-elected four years later and will pardon all of the nearly 1600 people that were arrested for the attack. At least 30 of them will be rearrested for new offenses after the pardon.
