On this day in 2014, in the southern tip of Nevada, on ancestral lands claimed by the Moapa Band of Paiute Indians, federal Bureau of Land Management officers begin rounding up the approximately 900 cows owned by Cliven Bundy, a Nevada rancher, because they are grazing on public land. Bundy has spent the past two decades contesting and resisting the federal ownership of public lands by refusing to pay over $1 million in leasing fees. The BLM rounds up 400 cattle as hundreds of armed Bundy supporters gather, raising tensions. In a week, they force the federal agency to surrender the cattle and retreat.

To this day, Bundy has made no concession, nor paid any leasing fee. Federal charges have been dropped due to prosecutorial misconduct — and his cattle continue to graze on public land.
