On this day in 1979, Easter Sunday, at an outdoor concert in Wichita, in the Great Plains of Kansas — long the homeland of several Native American tribes before settlers decimated buffalo herds — the rock band, Roenarc, finishes its set with the Starz song, “It’s a Riot.”

500 police, responding to calls reporting loud music and drug use, arrive on the scene. When people ignore orders to disperse, the police fire tear gas on the audience of 3500, which includes children. Some in the crowd throw rocks and bottles at the police. A squad car is overturned as cops strike concert goers with batons. Police fire guns in the air. More cop cars are attacked. Over 80 arrests are made.

Local band, Manilla Road, releases the song, “Herman Hill,” about the event later in the year.
