Million Woman March
October 25, 1997
Philadelphia, PA

Phile Chionesu, a Philadelphia store owner, and Asia Coney, a public housing activist — two Black women working independently of any national organizations — using the internet, flyers and word-of-mouth, summon between half a million and 2 million Black women to march from the Liberty Bell to the steps of the Philadelphia Art Museum on October 25, 1997. Demonstrators listen to speeches, dance to live music, and observe scheduled hours of prayer. Their 12-point platform includes demands for an end to homelessness; improvements to education, health care, and poverty; an investigation into CIA drug trafficking; support for incarcerated Black women and the release of prisoners including Mumia Abu Jamal.
