A teamster strike brings commercial transport to a halt in Minneapolis on May 16, 1934, during the Great Depression. Over the coming months, violence erupts between strikers, police and strikebreakers. The city deputizes hundreds of citizens, two of whom are cornered and killed by strikers on May 22. After negotiations fail in July, a single truck makes a delivery to the city market escorted by 50 armed police, and is then cut off by club-wielding strikers. The police open fire, killing two of the strikers and wounding over 60. The governor declares martial law and mobilizes 4000 National Guard who grant work permits and protection to truckers who agree with a union-backed proposal. An agreement that includes union recognition and a minimum wage is reached on August 21, ending the strike.
