Michigan State University Student Riot 1999

March 27, 1999
East Lansing, MI

Riots resulted in significant property damage and over 130 arrests.

On this day in 1999, at Michigan State University, located on land taken from indigenous Anishinaabe who continue to call the region home, the school basketball team loses an NCAA Championship game. Thousands of students and East Lansing residents riot in the streets. They burn furniture and cars and cause at least half a million dollars in property damage. They throw bottles and rocks at firefighters, who retreat, and police, who respond with tear gas. Over 60 fires are reported and 130 people are arrested. MSU students had rioted the previous year after a victory in an NCAA Championship game. Later in 1999, a state law is passed giving judges the discretion to bar students convicted of rioting from attending public colleges for up to two years.
