Stop Asian Hate
March 13, 2021
Nationwide
Today is the 5th anniversary of the first of many Stop Asian Hate demonstrations in cities throughout the United States. Reports of anti-Asian incidents had increased since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, attributed to the virus’s Chinese origin. Vicha Ratanapakdee, an 84-year old Thai man, had been purposefully and fatally knocked down in San Francisco in broad daylight, earlier in the year. On this day, hundreds of people march through Boston’s Chinatown as a show of support for Asian Americans. Three days later, a shooter visits three spas in Atlanta, and takes the lives of eight people, including six women of Asian descent. Stop Asian Hate demonstrations are held in over 100 cities in the following weeks.
