1967 Buffalo riot
june 27, 1967
Buffalo, ny
On this day in 1967, upon word that two white police officers had used excessive force while intervening in an altercation between two black teenagers the day before, hundreds of black residents of Buffalo take to the streets, smashing windows, looting, and setting fires. The next night, the crowds grow to over 1500. They throw stones and trash at police in riot gear. The police use teargas to disperse the crowds.
Rioting continues for a total of five nights, shutting the city down. The tag, “Soul Brother” is painted on buildings throughout downtown. Police use shotguns to disperse crowds. At least 80 people are injured, including many with gunshot wounds. The police make over 180 arrests.
This is just one of over 150 race riots in American cities in 1967, known as the “Long Hot Summer.”
