This day in 1999 is the first of the four-day Woodstock '99 music festival, a second attempt to revive the legendary festival of 1969. Organizers are determined to profit, keeping expenses low while setting ticket and concessions prices high. The lineup includes some of the most popular musicians of the day, performing on stages set up at a decommissioned Air Force base in Rome, New York.

Over 200,000 people attend, in an intense summer heat, and immediately get rowdy. The audience boos any music that doesn’t drive giant mosh pits. Reports of heavy drug use and sexual assaults are frequent.

On the fourth day, anarchy consumes the scene. The crowd overwhelms security, demolishes and sets fire to tents, cars, trailers, and a sound tower. The festival is forever remembered as a disaster.
