Disco Demolition Night

Thousands of fans stormed the field after Disco Demolition Night, forcing the second game to be canceled.

In the late 1970s, the popularity of disco caused a backlash from people who did not appreciate the music.

On this night in Chicago in 1979 — promoted as “Disco Demolition Night” — tickets to a doubleheader between the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers at Comiskey Park are discounted 98¢ for anyone turning in a disco album. The stadium is filled over capacity with people hopping fences and turnstiles to witness the scene. LPs, bottles and firecrackers are thrown onto the field during the first game. Between games, with the crowd chanting “Disco Sucks!,” a giant box filled with records in centerfield is blown up. Thousands of people rush the field.

The White Sox forfeit the second game as riot police clear the stadium. The popularity of disco declines over the next couple years.
