In Memphis, on January 7, 2023, members of the city's SCORPION police unit bludgeon 29-year-old Tyre Nichols to death, after he fled from a traffic stop. Five officers are fired, arrested and charged with murder, kidnapping, assault, and misconduct. Body cam footage of the assault is released to the public on this day in 2023, and protests follow immediately in dozens of cities throughout the United States, with demands for police reform. Two of the officers plead guilty and the other three are found guilty of evidence and witness tampering. The SCORPION unit is disbanded. Nichols' son is left fatherless. His family's lawsuit against the city is ongoing.
