On this day in 1847, in lands continuously inhabited by Pueblo people for over 1000 years, a mob of 500 Pueblos and Hispanos lay seige to a popular wagon stop and distillery, and kill many of the occupants. The U.S. military, which had taken the territory from Mexico several months prior, wages a violent campaign to put down a growing rebellion against the U.S. presence. Hundreds are killed, including 28 men publically hanged for treason. The revolt ends in six months. Despite eligibility but because the majority of inhabitants are perceived as insufficiently American, New Mexico is not granted statehood until 1912.
