Columbia Race Riot
February 25, 1946
Columbia, TN
On this day, 80 years ago, in Columbia, Tennessee, a Black U.S. Navy veteran accompanies his mother to a department store to pick up the radio they had left for repair, and find it had been sold to the father of one of the clerks. The clerk, a white man, is belligerent with them, leading to fisticuffs and the clerk going through a window. Evening approaches, and a mob of white people gathers. Residents in The Bottom, a Black neighborhood, shoot out street lights and take defensive positions. Four white police officers are shot and wounded. Late at night, law enforcement raids The Bottom, shooting indiscriminately, entering and looting homes and businesses. Two Black people are killed and over 100 arrested. Despite multiple trials, only one person, a Black man, serves time.
