Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden

87 years ago tonight — 7 months before the Nazi invasion of Poland and the start of World War II — more than 20,000 American Nazis rally in New York City's Madison Square Garden. "If George Washington were alive today, he would be friends with Adolph Hitler" is the declaration that kicks it off. Attendees raise Nazi salutes to the U.S. flag and speakers decry Jewish influence in the U.S. government. 100,000 anti-Nazis rally outside. More than 2000 police are called in to maintain order.

Isadore Greenbaum, a 26-yr-old plumber, rushes the stage and is subdued by Nazi paramilitary.

As the War ramps up, American Nazis largely go into hiding and their leaders are jailed for various infractions.

The party publicly reforms in 1959. Today, American fascists go by many names.
