Dijon Kizzee protests

August 31, 2020
Los angeles, CA

In the afternoon of this day in 2020, Dijon Kizzee, a 29-year-old Black man, is observed by law enforcement riding his bike on the wrong side of the street in Westmont in Los Angeles County. As police chase Kizzee down the block, a bundle of clothing he is carrying falls out of his arms, and a 9mm semi-automatic pistol drops out. Police shoot him 16 times, killing him.

For days, protesters gather outside the South Los Angeles sheriff's station. Stand-offs grow tense and violent, with protestors throwing rocks and trash and police firing rubber bullets and tear gas into the crowds. Police arrest dozens of people over four nights of unrest.

Nobody is charged for Kizzee’s death, but L.A. county settles a lawsuit with a multi-million dollar pay out to his family.
