On this day in 1991, in the Crown Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn, one of the drivers in a rabbi’s motorcade runs a red light, veers from an oncoming car onto a sidewalk, and hits two 7-year-old children of Guyanese immigrants, killing one. An ambulance takes the driver away while responders attempt to help the children, pinned beneath the car.

News and rumors spread quickly, angering black residents. A mob of black youths attack Jews on the street, seriously injuring several and killing Yankel Rosenbaum, an Orthodox Jewish student from Australia. Over the next three days, rioters loot stores and attack Jewish homes while chanting antisemitic phrases. Two weeks after the riot, Anthony Graziosi, a non-Jewish man with a hasidic-style beard, is dragged from his car and killed by black men.
