On the night of August 11, 2017, hundreds of white nationalists march across the University of Virginia, a campus built by free and enslaved Black laborers, in Charlottesville, the ancestral homelands of the displaced Monacan Indian Nation.

They are protesting the removal of a memorial to a Confederate general. They wave Southern Cross, Nazi and other flags; carry tiki torches; and yell chants like, "Jews will not replace us." The crowd grows bigger the next day, as does a group of counter-protesters, and they clash violently.

The governor declares a state of emergency and orders police to break up the crowds. But as people disperse, a man drives a car into the counter-protesters, killing Heather Heyer and injuring 19 others.
