On this day in 1977, about 2000 people protest construction of the Seabrook Station Nuclear Power Plant in Seabrook, New Hampshire, on the Hampton River estuary near the Atlantic shore, just north of the Massachusetts border. Though the demonstration is peaceful, over 1400 protesters are arrested. Many refuse to provide IDs or pay bail as a form of resistance and are held for days or weeks in National Guard armories. Eventually, they are all released.

A dozen municipalities within a 10-mile radius of the site do not cooperate with construction of the power plant and refuse to participate in emergency evacuation planning.

One of two planned reactors is completed in 1990, but ongoing setbacks bankrupt the original owner.

Today, Seabrook Station provides about half of New Hampshire's electricity.
