Democracy Spring
april 2, 2016
Washington, D.C.
Ten years ago today, hundreds of people begin a 10-day march from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C., eventually joined by thousands more and culminating in a week of sit-ins at the U.S. Capitol. They denounce the Supreme Court “Citizens United” ruling that affirms the rights of corporations to spend unlimited money on political advertising, and demand legislation to end gerrymandering, along with broader voting reforms.
Over 1,200 people are arrested for acts of civil disobedience. A Capitol Police officer publicly states that protesters will "merely be processed, cited with a fine, and released."
A dozen protesters enter the Capitol rotunda, zip tie themselves to some scaffolding, and are arrested.
To date, none of the demands have been realized on the federal level.
